Letter to the Editor, ISSUE: NATION’S 250th
The Philadelphia Inquirer, July 8, 2015
The introduction of the telephone was just one highlight of the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which attracted nearly one in four Americans (“Philadelphia, a city of firsts,” July 3). Now a diverse group of Philadelphians are making big plans for another milestone: the nation’s 250th birthday, in 2026. For all Americans, the anniversary presents a powerful moment to strive toward a more perfect union. And for Philadelphians, it is our privilege to reconvene our fellow countrymen.
Following next week’s NAACP convention with an address by President Obama, the coming visit by Pope Francis, and the 2016 Democratic National Convention, we must build momentum and organize plans for 2026 that will pay dividends for years to come.
USA250 was formed to ensure that Philadelphia will earn the privilege to serve as host to the nation and the world for the anniversary. The Phillies have already submitted a request to host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 2026, and we invite area citizens to contribute their own ideas for the yearlong celebration.
